A co-worker of mine-from my days working in Zion National Park-died in a plane crash on Saturday.

I've been sad since I received the news. Sad because it is an awful way to go. Sad because he was so young. Sad because he leaves behind parents and three siblings. No wife. No children. No legacy.
One of the things I disliked about the park service and the people employed through the agency, is that there seemed to be a lack of familial ties. Most of the people I knew while working there were living with girlfriends/boyfriends, more interested in having a dog than ever having children, and basically threw all "traditional" roles out the window.
That way of life seemed slightly appealing-having no one to 'hold you back', throwing caution to the wind-but when tragedy strikes, it just seems much more sad.
I will miss my fun-loving, hyper, free-spirited friend.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend. I read his obituary, and it sounds like he loved his job, but I agree with you about the lack of a legacy. I think a life lived for ones self is fun, but ultimately meaningless. Sad for everyone really.
