(Grayson Lawrence Sherman, 3 days old)
Here are a couple of pictures of Grayson just chillin' with his first stuffed animal (thanks Scott and Kristin).
We are slowly making the adjustment to our family of five. Thankfully my mom is here to help. Especially since Austin will be returning to work tomorrow. I don't know what I would do without her helping with the dishes, entertaining the little ones and holding the baby for me so I can 'rest'.
I am still coughing, have lost my voice, and generally am just feeling miserable (cold on top of recent labor = no fun at all!). I think I've slept a total of less than eight hours since I went to the hospital on Thursday morning. I normally have a very hard time sleeping after I give birth anyway (not really sure why), but add the cold on top of everything, and it is very difficult to sleep. I have a hard time breathing at night, especially, and that is when Grayson likes to marathon nurse. Hopefully I can get him to sleep for longer stretches now that my milk has come in.
Oh, and that presents another challenge that I am adjusting to.
(Warning!: TMI ahead)
When Grayson's doctor visited on the second day at the hospital, she told me that he was tongue tied and that she clipped he frenula under his tongue. I'm glad she caught this as soon as she did, because little did I know, but he was starting to do a real number on my nipples.
When babies are tongue tied, they can't open their mouths wide enough, or bring their tongues out far enough to nurse to draw the milk back to swallow. They also fatigue really quickly when they do nurse, and they start 'biting' or 'chewing' instead of sucking. For about 32 hours, Grayson had been doing this, and the compression made it so my nipples started to crack. Thankfully his latch has improved and they are starting to heal, but anyone else that has experienced this knows how uncomfortable it can be.
But, other than a couple of difficulties, things are wonderful in the house. It is so sweet to watch Kalli and Grant with Grayson. They already love him so much. I find them kissing him, patting his head, playing with his hair, giving him the binkie, and just lovin' on him. He is a wonderful addition to our family, and we love him dearly!

Julie,
Congratulations!!!! I am so happy for you, he is perfect. Both of my babies were tongue tied.....I know all about that...and I didn't put two and two together until after I gave up nursing McKay that was indeed the problem in the first place....I will be wiser in the future! I just only wish I had a pediatrician or a lactation specialist who should of know...catch it! Maybe next time!
Congratulations again! I pray you can get some sleep while you have help!!!
Jenny
Congratulations! He is super cute and I love the name you picked. Good luck with the adjustment, I've always heard the third child was the hardest. You'll have to let me know since I skipped 3 and went straight to 4. So I guess I'll never know for myself.
Oh, he is cute! Did all your kids start out with such dark hair? I'm glad to hear that you are adjusting, but I'm really sorry about the nursing issues and a cold on top of that! Nursing sucks (literally) the first couple of weeks but it will be worth it. I remember you giving me some helpful tips and extra encouragement my first time around and it helped to get me through until it stopped being painful. If you haven't tried them already, cold cabbage leaves or steeped black tea bags were really soothing (although you have to be careful with the tea, it can stain your clothes. Hang in there, and post more pictures when you get a chance. He's a Sherman alright!
He is a beautiful baby boy! I have never heard of a baby being tongue tied thanks for the info. Good luck getting over your cold, recovering from having a baby and knee surgery.
Congrats, Julie! He is too cute!

Congratulations! Welcome to the world Little Grayson!! Hope you're feeling better soon. 3 was a big adjustment for me - I didn't think it would be but we had a hard time getting to where we felt normal and able to handle things. It slowed us down and we stopped going as many places, it just became easier to stay home. Good luck!
Congrats Julie! I think our babies have cool birth dates. He is such a cute little man!
