My daughter threw herself out of her crib tonight. Normally, she goes down for bed at night very easily. Apparently, tonight she didn't want to go to sleep.
We went through her normal nighttime routine, and when I walked away to shut the door, she started crying for me. I went into the bathroom to hang my robe up, and heard a loud crash come from her room. At first I thought it was just Jader kicking the side of her crib, showing her angst that I put her down. But, I thought it was a little too loud for that and just wanted to take a peek.
I opened the door to her room probably three seconds after the loud thump, and found her on her feet, crying and running towards the door. I was surprised, to say the least. I don't know how she landed from the fall. I'm guessing maybe on her back. I think she is very lucky that she didn't hurt herself worse than she did. I believe it scared her more than anything.
I picked her up, and took her into my room to look her over for injuries. I took her pj's off to check for bumps or scrapes, and I also checked her eyes. She cried for only a little while, and was easy to console.
After she was calmed down, I tried again to put her to bed. She was obviously very tired, because while holding her, she would fall asleep. But, as soon as I laid her down in her crib, she would stand up and start crying for me to pick her up again. I think she is afraid of her crib now.
Our solution to her throwing herself out of the crib? We lowered the rails and dropped her mattress to the floor. This way, if she does it again, she will only have a couple of feet to fall. I'm just thankful she didn't break her arm, leg, or neck. I've heard of very awful stories of children dying due to falling out of their cribs.
What do you do in your home? Drop the mattress? Use a crib tent? Move your child into a toddler bed?

That's scary, isn't it? Logan did that about a month ago - twice. I felt like a horrible mother for letting it happen twice! His bed is one of those "grow with me" beds and so (after letting him sleep on the couch) I converted it into a day bed. It has rails on it so he doesn't just fall out, but he can climb in and out by himself - which also meant I had to close the door and buy a night light (I don't like night lights). It took him about a week to get used to it - those were some long nights. Little monkeys, anyway.
